Greetings!

The good people at highereg.com invited me to share my game development process with you on Future Fighter (TM). It is a sci-fi fighting game where I am taking my real-life martial arts and science experience and putting them into your hands. The game gives you direct control of expert fighting movements and resonantly envisioned future tech within a dynamite roster of intelligent strikers, technical ninjas, and futuristic holy warriors. I am looking forward to your feedback on the development process here at highereg.com. Now fight!

Welcome, Doc!

Didn't realise it was your own martial arts and science experience you were translating. Wicked, will be here for any feedback you may need!

Also as mentioned, if there's help you require with regards to art and/or music -- simply yell and I'll see what we can do. Me being of course the moderator of all things Higher Eclectic. Also quick tip, to include images in your posts simply drop in the image URL (provided it is hosted on Imgur or the like) within the post instead of attaching it.

I've fixed that for you for now.

Catch you soon!

Yeah, man. I have been practicing martial arts since I was 5 years old. I am classically trained in kung fu.  In the last 15 years or so, I have moved more towards practical application of fighting techniques in full-contact situations.  I have encountered so many good martial artists, body types, and styles (e.g. muay thai, jujitsu, taekwondo, karate, kung fu, boxing, military martial arts, etc.) that I am going to try and bring that under your control in the game.  And you will have to face those thought process when you fight the AI, too!

Thank you so much for reaching out for art and music needs.  I am still so early in development, I am not sure what I am going to need to farm out at this point.  So far, I am doing all of the art and music myself:

Going for a futuristic look and a hard-trance-inspired sound track.  We'll see how it goes!

Thanks for building this forum for us to talk about development and share ideas.  Looking forward to making some posts!

That animation is really fluid and spot on, I must say! :O

Caught your newsletter as well!

Pleasure's all mine; hard-trance inspired soundtrack you say? Can't help but think that our member Synthwave musician Van Reeves would be an interesting fit. He operates on donations-alone as well, so that might be of help if and when you do choose to avail of it.

Keep 'em coming. 🙂

Dude, yes!  Reeves' got mad skills. I sent him a message, and followed him on every network I could find 🙂

So glad you got the newsletter!  What do you think about the new background?  Things you liked?  Things you didn't like?  Areas to improve on?

Thanks for the props on the animation.  I built a motion capture studio in my house, the most recent addition to which was a second motion capture camera :

It changed everything.  The level of detail that the whole system captures now is astounding.  I have it arranged in a triangle with me at the third point, so there are virtually no blocked limbs or movements that don't get captured.  I can literally just be myself -- perform my martial arts movements as if I was doing them in a fight.

More to follow.

The background I'd say is where the newsletter picture most falls short, in all honesty. Not only could it do with a larger palette of colors, greater intensity to show off action and better lighting, but the two character models also seem a bit out of place there.

Ah, so it's motion capture that's in your toolbox! I'd assumed so when I saw how fluid the animations were, rad. From what I've seen of the game so far, I genuinely believe it could do with more sophisticated, stylish and 'happening' backgrounds to complement the character designs.

Oh and left you an e-mail. 🙂

Dude, you're so right!  I really appreciate you taking your time out to analyze that.  Let me try and work on those areas of my design moving forward.  Let me know if you do or do not see an improvement.

Best,

Much thanks for the shout-out on your recent letter as well; I'm flattered to know this place is being of help to you. 🙂

The letter also brought up another passing concern; mainly in relation to inconsistency between character designs. You see, this character --

is a lot more interesting, fleshed-out and detailed than the chaps seen here --

I find the former white dude to be brilliant, but the other two to be quite bland in comparison. May be look into that as well? Also, will you be adding color schemes to the characters over time or just sticking to solid paint schemes?

Just thought I'd share!

You are quite welcome for the shout!  Higher Electric Ground is living up to its name, and I give credit where credit's due.

Thank you so much for pointing out the inconsistency between character designs as well.  Let's get to the bottom of this!

Do you think that this render of Omega (he's the chap in the mirror match GIF above fighting in Combo City) is on par with the Omen Knight (he's the big white guy above throwing the superman punch on planet Firefly)?

View post on imgur.com

If so, then it probably is just the fancier lighting I used on Firefly. This is because this new render of Omega on planet Firefly is the exact same uniform used in the mirror match GIF. I just took the solid paint scheme coloring out. (More on that below.) Combo City will also get the fancier lighting in the end product, so you should get the nice effect there as well in the end.

However, if you don't think these are on par then do you mean that the actual uniform of the Omen Knight has more detail?  In that case, I have the ability to add more uniforms for Omega. Here's a quick sample:

Do these additional uniforms give you the more interesting, fleshed-out, and detailed look you were hoping for?

My original plan was actually to use the solid paint scheme coloring over a single, base uniform for all the characters.  The reason being is I wanted to give players the ability to change the look of their character, but I wanted the time I spent on customizing the  characters to be in balance with the time I spend on the fighting engine, motion capture, music, marketing and other aspects of the game. For this reason, I built a custom color creator for the game that basically allows you to dial in and save almost any color you want for your character:

So I guess my question to you is this: Are the solid paint schemes enough with this ability to customize and save your own colors or do the characters need the additional uniforms?

Thank you in advance for your input!

Finally got that lighting in place for the Fortress of the Star Winders as well.

http://docbrockgames.com/post.php?Post=37

I went with a single light source emanating in all directions from a centrally focused point. I put it just above the base so that the light could highlight the inner structure and then blanketly fold over the circumference as it faded out. Since you also recommended a splash of color, I put a green glow in there.  I noticed the green uniforms melded well with the other colors as I was customizing them with the custom color creator in the video of the last post, so green it is.

Looking at all of this closely, I think yes -- the renders of Omega and Omen Knight are indeed at par, making it a case of fancy lighting that you used on Planet Firefly! Taking that into consideration then, I now feel Omega looks good as he is on Planet Firefly -- and I prefer his stock uniform rather than any of the other ones you have on hand.

I also wasn't aware of the color customizer; in my humble opinion, solid paint schemes with the rest of the customizability being left to the user is a good choice!

I'm however not much of a fan of the Fortress and Combo city backgrounds as I've alluded to before. Will fights on Planet Firefly be within the same scene Omega/Omen Knight are standing on above? If so, I can't help but thing that more zoomed in, claustrophobic fight arenas would do better than that of Fortress or Combo City.

Hope I'm making sense? I could be going against your game's vision of course, and if so apologies for that. But have you looked at all the game-play snippets out of Injustice 2? Notice the claustrophobic fight arenas? -

Wonder if something similar would work well with Future Fighter. 🙂

Okay, awesome!  I am glad you like Omega's stock uniform and the color customizer! I do think it is important to be able to give your character a different look every now and again to (1) keep things fresh and (2) create your favorite look. I think it enhances replayability in a fighting game.

I do see what you mean about the Fortress and Combo City backgrounds. They are not quite on the level of Planet Firefly.  I will work hard to raise the bar for the new backgrounds I make. I will post them here to see what you think.

You ask an excellent question about the claustrophobic fight arenas. I am not quite ready to release that information just yet 🙂  It gets into some of the special features Future Fighter has that I am holding onto until closer to launch.  I think you will be pleased with the results, though!

And, yes, Injustice 2 looks amazing!

Thank you so much for your feedback.  I am really enjoying posting here!
